The port of Cork is the main port on the South coast of Ireland. A sheltered, deepwater harbor, it is ideally located close to the main shipping lanes to and from Northern Europe. The port is one of two Irish ports which handle all five shipping modes. The port has four distinct public port facilities situated at the City Quays, the Tivoli Industrial and Dock Estate, the Ringaskiddy Deepwater and Ferry Terminals and the Cobh Cruise Terminal.
Cork port offers a wide choice of fast, scheduled lift-on lift-off and roll-on roll-off services to continental Europe. It offers a scheduled ro-ro shortsea service to Swansea and Cork is the only Irish port providing a deepsea ro-ro service to Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean, and West Africa. At the Tivoli Container Terminal as well as the Ringaskiddy Ro-Ro Terminal, modern port facilities and cargo handling equipment, high productivity levels, competitive pricing and twenty four hour working, seven days per week have contributed greatly to increased unitized throughput.
The main depth of water at the harbour's entrance is 12, 9m at Chart Datum which permits fully laden vessels of approximately 70000 / 90000 d.w.t to enter the harbour on any highwater. An inside bar at the spit bank near Cobh is dredged to a depth of 11,2m at Chart Datum which permits vessels of aproximately 60,000 d.w.t. beyond that point.
The rising tide at Cork ranges from 3,4m on neap tides to 4,4m on spring tides.
